Abstract:

Since the early 20th century, the “Literary Garden” column in newspapers had become an important position for the publication of old-style poetry. However, after the New Literature Movement in 1917, with the impact of new thought, new culture and new literature, the publication of old-style poetry in newspapers was frustrated between 1919 and 1921. The “Literary Garden” column was ceased in many national newspapers, such as The Republican Daily News, The Morning Post, The China Times, L’Impartial, The Eastern Miscellany, The Short Story Magazine, and The Eastern Times. This indicated that the literary criterion of the times had changed that new interest in poetry reading began to form, and old-style poetry faced crisis in a new generation of reading world. But after even in this period, old-style poetry was still an important scenery in newspapers: there were some “Literary Garden” coming back to life, such as L’Impartial and The Eastern Times; or the publication of old-style poetry had never been interrupted, such as Shun Pao and Social Welfare; or newly established newspapers started “Literary Garden” column, such as The Critical Review and Kuowen Weekly. In these positions, there were poets of Tongguang Style extensively publishing their poems in south and north newspapers, poets of the Southern Society whose publishing positions were distributed widely, and poets of Gorgeous and Funny Poem School who could be called the absent in the history of literature. There was also competition for publication between them, such as “two-track” approach of The Eastern Times and iteration of The Short Story Magazine, but undoubtedly, they jointly created a “lively” old literary garden.
